Synopsis

The main goal of this book is to present the tradition of the European Sanskrit grammars written within the period from the seventeenth up to the nineteenth century. The book consists of seven main parts and a number of chapters. As the first modern contacts between Europe and India began in the fifteenth century and they have been continued in many areas up to the present times, the book starts with short information on this topic. Already at the turn of fifteenth and sixteenth centuries first Europeans found their way to India. They set out in the quest for discoveries of new lands. At the very beginning they were looking for “Christians and spices”, as noted in W. Halbfass’s book India and Europe. An Es- say in Philosophical Understanding. Thus, this period may be called the period of travellers and merchants. They were soon followed by missionaries who promptly started to show interest in the languages of India, among them in Sanskrit.
