Synopsis

A CURSED CENTURY – A WONDERFUL CENTURY

From Zygmunt Krasiński, who was the first to notice that the poetry of his contemporaries was this kind of compensation of a historic tragedy of the nation, to other Romantics, who gave this sentiment a narrower literary expression in the form of messianism, variously understood, and further on, to positivist compensatory organic work, and to the Young Polish call for an act that would overcome spiritual incapacity – the author constructs his argument, illustrating it abundantly with examples of selected literary works. Indeed, he offers an “illustration” of the title thesis rather than providing the ultimate proof of it. Nevertheless the presented material appears sufficient to provoke substantive critique from the point of view of both literary criticism and sociology of literature, in the spirit of the current studies in the cultural history of literature and the entanglement of literary works of art in extra-literary contexts. This kind of critique also has a 19th century predecessor, Stanisław Brzozowski, whose views conclude the discussion.
Therefore, this is inherently a historical literary study, but its main thesis is psychoanalytic in character. From this viewpoint, after elucidating the notion of compensation, which in literature appears as sublimation, the author follows a 19th-century trail, beginning with the artists’ passive reaction to humiliation brought about by captivity, and leading to the active “pursuit of power” when captivity was coming to an end. Mythologized in this way, reality, paradoxically, found support in the ideology of sarmatism, which had been overcome a century before and now came to be seen as a positive spiritual tradition.
