Synopsis

TO CONQUER SPACE THANKS TO TIME. TIME IN RUSSIAN TRAVELOG IN THE XIX CENTURY

While differentiating a trip (a real movement) and a travelog (a description of this movement) we realize that the basic concept of the travelog is space (though any aligment of words is connected with time). А.А. Potebnya wrote that time seems to be a space for a person. In other words, time is dependent on space. Time is a range of successive dimensional pictures for someone, linear and cyclical types of time are based on the dimensional metaphors. Even eternity can be described as a special type of space where the one can be nothing or everything. Travelog as a genre turns to be an optimal model among all other types of narratives in this regard. Though, time can be more relevant for modernism and postmodernism, our research demonstrates, that time can bring events and people in space and in the trip but also can be ignored when we talk about space itself. A man attempts to conquer space while using time since he can do it in one minute, not using time as an instrument. Still, a man forgets about time as soon as he or she has conquered space.
