Synopsis
LINGUISTIC AND CULTURAL IMAGE OF WEEDS AND HERBS MOTIVATED BY NAMES OF ANIMALS (USING THE MATERIAL FROM SŁOWNIK GWAR LUBELSZCZYZNY [‘A DICTIONARY OF LUBLIN DIALECTS’])
The paper considers the names of weeds and herbs motivated by the names of domestic and wild animals, birds, reptiles and amphibians. Special attention is given to the shape of plants, including flowers, leaves and stems, their beneficial and harmful properties, as well as their magical, symbolic and cultural connotations. Analysis of the interviews with the inhabitants of the villages of the Lublin region (within the current borders of the voivodeship) reveals that the diagnostic features of plants are aligned with the conceptual framework of folk understanding of the world together with the environmental factors, external features, and cultural specificity.
