Synopsis

TESTING WRITING ABILITY IN PROFICIENCY EXAMS: A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF THREE EXAMINATION SYSTEMS USING TASKS FOR THE B2 LEVEL AS AN EXAMPLE

The purpose of the article is to compare the writing papers of three proficiency tests: the B2 State Proficiency Test in Polish as a foreign language, an English language test: B2 First and an Italian language qualification: CELI 3. First, the author discusses the characteristics of a useful language test and the criteria which writing tasks in a proficiency test should satisfy. Next, she analyses the requirements for candidates taking the aforementioned examinations and compares the structure of the writing papers in the three testing contexts as well as the tasks in the writing papers. Finally, she outlines possible directions for changes in the Writing Part of the State Proficiency Test in Polish as a foreign language.
