Panorama of a Historic City. Kraków as a Testing Ground is a detailed study of the protection of Kraków’s panoramas between 1994 and 2014, during the period of political and economic transformation. This era was marked by intense social, economic, and spatial changes, during which the city had to reconcile the demands of development with the need to preserve its cultural heritage. Kraków, as the historic capital of Poland and a city with a unique urban landscape inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, was under particular investment pressure, resulting in a confl ict between the city’s representational function and the dynamics of urban development. The author approaches the city panorama not merely as a view from a specific vantage point, but also as a carrier of Kraków’s symbolic and cultural identity. Panoramas – whether observed from hills and boulevards or from the everyday perspective of residents using urban space – are for her a medium that conveys historical meanings, aesthetic values, and urban coherence. The book demonstrates that disruptions in the perception of panoramas aff ect not only the city’s appearance but also residents’ sense of belonging and cultural awareness.
