THE TOWN OF DOBCZYCE AND ITS RURAL SURROUNDINGS IN THE YEARS 1918-1939
This work analyzes the functioning of the Dobczyce community and the surrounding villages within the Dobczyce court district. It discusses the territorial scope of the judicial district, which included the town of Dobczyce and 44 surrounding villages. Demographic changes are also presented. The dissertation addresses administrative changes that impacted the local community's life. Additionally, the activities of local government, which formed part of the complex political landscape, are characterized. The economic life of Dobczyce was heavily influenced by guilds, agricultural cooperatives, credit unions (such as “Kasa Stefczyka”), and other cooperatives, whose dynamic activity significantly improved the inhabitants’ living conditions and enabled the implementation of various valuable social and cultural initiatives. Volunteer fire brigades also played a crucial role in enhancing fire safety. The work also examines the activities of theater groups, choirs, and orchestras, which not only fostered artistic talent but also helped shape the local community’s identity. The school system in the region, along with the role of educational institutions in educating the younger generation, is also discussed. The justice system played an important role in social life, as the location of the court in Dobczyce made the town a central hub for community activities. The religious life of the town is likewise described, as it largely dictated the rhythm of daily life and influenced every aspect of the community. Therefore, the dissertation discusses the parish network and the activities of numerous church institutions. Furthermore, the functioning of the Jewish community is also analyzed.
