DO NEW SOURCES EXIST FOR THE CRACOW BIOGRAPHY OF VEIT STOSS (STWOSZ)?

In this article the Authors undertake a renewed examination of the source materials thus far known to relate to the Cracow period in the life of the distinguished sculptor Veit Stoss (Stwosz) [1447/1448–1533]. The point of departure is an unpublished study by Roman Grodecki (1889–1964), himself an eminent Cracow medievalist, who in the mid-1950s considered whether certain payments noted in the royal accounts to a man named “Stoss” might in fact refer to the creator of the St Mary Altarpiece. While subjecting Grodecki’s reasoning to critical scrutiny, the Authors also revisit the question of Stoss’s Cracow marriage and conduct a diplomatic analysis of the entry commonly known as the foundation act of the altarpiece – introducing several minor refinements to his Cracow biography.
