THE ITALIAN RISORGIMENTO IN POLISH HISTORIOGRAPHY FROM THE SECOND HALF OF THE 19TH CENTURY TO THE TURN OF THE 21ST CENTURY: A REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE ON THE SUBJECT
In Polish historiography, research has focused on Garibaldi and Mazzini, the Spring of Nations (1848) and Colonel Francesco Nullo, who died in the January Uprising (1863). Kalikst Morawski referred to the joint struggle for freedom and independence of both countries, while Marceli Handelsman made a detailed presentation of the ‘Italian policy’ of Prince Jerzy Adam Czartoryski. Research on Mazzini’s thought and activities was conducted by Stefan Kieniewicz in the post-WWII period and by Joanna Ugniewska in the 1970s and 1980s. A summary of the views of 20th-century Polish historians on the history of the Italian Risorgimento can be found in History of Italy by Józef Andrzej Gierowski, who emphasized that Italian unification – not devoid of difficulties and crises – gave rise to the process of shaping the modern Italian nation.
