IN A LOW VOICE: DEBATES ON THE RISORGIMENTO IN THE DISCOURSES OF POLISH FILM CRITICISM

The article explores the reception and reinterpretation of Italian Risorgimento narratives in Polish cultural discourse, focusing on translation and film criticism under the ideological conditions of the Polish People’s Republic. Drawing on examples such as Edmondo De Amicis’s Cuore, Florestano Vancini’s Bronte, Alessandro Blasetti’s 1860, Roberto Rossellini’s Viva l’Italia!, and Luchino Visconti’s Senso and Il Gattopardo, it examines how Polish critics reframed the Risorgimento through a romantic independence paradigm. The study argues that this Italian historical experience, while ideologically tolerated, remained a marginal, elite narrative, overshadowed by domestic myths of national struggle and subject to mechanisms of censorship and political adaptation.
