Streszczenie

NEW FINDINGS ON THE HISTORY OF THE ALABASTER STATUETTES OF THE APOSTLES FROM THE DOMINICAN MONASTERY IN CRACOW AFTER THE COMPLETION OF CONSERVATION WORK

The article presents the results of research on a group of six alabaster sculptures from c. 1460, originally part of the now-lost altarpiece of St. Peter Martyr from the Church of the Holy Trinity in Cracow. Technological and isotopic analyses confirmed that they were made in the Netherlandish artistic circle from alabaster originating from Franconian deposits, indicating connections with the tradition of workshops influenced by the Master of the Rimini Altarpiece. Discoveries made during conservation treatment – such as workshop marks, traces of varied sculptural and painting techniques, and later alterations in the form of mounting elements and subsequent paint layers – helped confirm earlier findings and deepen the understanding of the sculptures’ history. The case described demonstrates the benefits of using conclusions drawn from conservation observations for art-historical research.
