THE POLISH RESISTANCE MOVEMENT IN THE VILNIUS REGION IN THE CANON OF LITHUANIAN HISTORICAL MEMORY AFTER 1989

This article explores the evolution of Lithuania’s interpretation of the Polish resistance movement in the Vilnius region after 1989. It traces the shift from narratives that denied or stigmatized the Home Army (Armia Krajowa), through a gradual process of normalization, to present-day attempts at shaping a more conciliatory and nuanced historical discourse. The study examines the deeper historical roots of Polish–Lithuanian tensions originating in the Second World War, as well as the role of Soviet propaganda in reinforcing negative stereotypes. It identifi es pivotal institutional developments – such as the work of the 1993 governmental commission and the 2004 reconciliation between Polish and Lithuanian veterans – and emphasizes the impact of contemporary geopolitical dynamics, particularly Russia’s increasingly aggressive policies, which have encouraged a rapprochement between Polish and Lithuanian narratives. Drawing on a broad range of archival, scholarly, and journalistic sources, the article argues that despite the continued presence of critical interpretations of the Home Army, both states have undergone a significant transformation in their memory politics, moving toward a more balanced, dialogical, and mutually respectful understanding of their shared past.
