Streszczenie

TADEUSZ KANTOR’S "KURKA WODNA" AND THE REALITY OF THE APOCALYPSE

The article reflects on archival traces of Tadeusz Kantor’s 1967 staging of Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz’s play Kurka Wodna (The Water Hen). The starting point is the title character, transformed by the artist into an object in the Cricoteka archive – an iron bathtub with a mannequin. In order to enter into the dramaturgy of the performance and describe the role of Kurka Wodna played by Mira Rychlicka, the author reconstructs the sociopolitical circumstances and the place of the performance in Kantor’s work. The analysis leads to seeing in the actor’s creation a ghostly character with an insurmountable power of return, and its new interpretation is placed within the circle of apocalyptic concepts according to Jacques Derrida.
