Streszczenie
THE RELIGIOUS ASPECTS OF ZBIGNIEW HERBERT’S POETRY
This article attempts to identify references to the Absolute in the poetry of Zbigniew Herbert. Its central thesis is based on the conviction that Mr. Cogito’s attitude toward religious matters is characterized by profound skepticism. A distinction is made between religious poetry and the religiosity of poetry, recognizing them as non-synonymous. The religiosity of poetry denotes the presence of religious themes, whereas religious poetry is characterized by a specific attitude of the lyrical self toward God. The analyses conducted on a large corpus of texts in the course of this study confirm the observation that agnosticism serves as the foundation of the protagonist’s relationship to God in Herbert’s poetry.
