This article draws upon the recently uncovered, unintended for publication diary entries of Karol Estreicher, including his opinions regarding Helena Modjeska and her husband, Karol Chłapowski. For the most part, these views differ shockingly from previously known accounts of what appeared to be not merely cordial, but genuinely friendly relations between them. This discrepancy merits close attention, as it demonstrates that even within the actress’s innermost circle, there was ample resentfulness. This reality largely explains her subsequent decisions to change her professional environment.
