Synopsis

THE INTELLIGENTSIA AND TWO CONCEPTS OF LIBERALISM. ON A DISUSSION BETWEEN ANDRZEJ WALICKI AND MIŁOWIT KUNIŃSKI

The article aims to reconstruct a discussion about the scope of obligations of the social group of intelligentsia. The ideas set forth by Miłowit Kuniński and Andrzej Walicki are grounded in their divergent views of the concept of liberalism. Whereas Kuniński represents the conservative type of liberalism that emphasizes the importance of traditional institutions and objective system of values as well as highlighting the impact of the authority in the course of socialization and individuation processes, Walicki more readily inclines towards left-wing liberalism essentially rooted in axiological pluralism, autonomy of the individual and the principal role of positive laws. The article attempts to reveal the ways in which the reflection over the intelligentsia and its function correlates with the concepts of human being and society implied by both approaches to liberalism.
