REMARKS ON JOHN H. MCDOWELL ON SECOND NATURE
In this paper, I discuss John H. McDowell’s naturalism of second nature as a response to the naturalistic paradigm dominating in the contemporary English-language philosophy, and I set McDowell’s position against some of the philosophical ideas of Miłowit Kuniński. These ideas are related, inter alia, to such issues as the foundations of political system (in particular, democracy) and the factors which shape the moral personality of individuals as members of political community. Both McDowell and Kuniński draw on the ancient philosophical thought, especially on Aristotle, but also on the philosophy of G.W.F. Hegel (the latter is of particular relevance for McDowell). Appealing to Kant’s ethico-political considerations, though, I argue that there are problematic aspects in the naturalism of second nature which seem to accompany also some of the philosophical ideas of Kuniński.
