Synopsis

APPLYING CORPUS LINGUISTICS IN RESEARCH OF VOCABULARY EVALUATION IN POLISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE HANDBOOKS. ANALYSIS AND EVALUATION OF THE HANDBOOK POLSKI KROK PO KROKU 1

The goal of this paper was to analyse the vocabulary of the handbook for Polish as a foreign language Polski krok po kroku 1 with the use of frequency lists. It was found out that the lexical material in the book is too difficult for the beginners, as, out of 3021 lexical types, only 960 were covered by a lexical list dedicated to be learnt at the A1 proficiency level, while 273 lexemes from that list were not included in the handbook. Among the lexemes exceed-ing the A1 level one could find internationalisms, proper names and their derivates, as well as aspectual pairs of verbs. From the perspective of a foreign language learning/teaching process, the presence of such vocabulary may be controversial. The  paper proves  that  im-plementation of stricter control of the vocabulary used in the foreign language handbooks could possibly improve results of the teaching process.
