Synopsis
A MIXED METHODS PERSPECTIVE ON NONVERBAL COMMUNICATION IN TEACHING POLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE
The main goal of the article is to review how the nonverbal aspect of communication is included in the process of learning and teaching Polish as a foreign language. In the first part of the article, the author presents a typology of the main nonverbal behaviours and methods of their description within documents published a.e. by the Council of Europe (CEFR-CV, 2018) and curricula for Polish language teaching (Janowska et al., ed., 2016). In the second part, there is a description and analysis of the conducted research. A group of subjects was given a questionnaire, assessing their intercultural nonverbal sensitivity, preferences and attitudes towards nonverbal communication. There are two groups in which statistically significant differences were found, the first being the representatives of distant cultures, and the second being introverted and less expressive people. However, only up to 30% of the dif-ference can be explained with these factors. The practical application of the study’s results is therefore closely related to the learner-oriented approach in foreign language teaching.
