Synopsis

THE PHILOSOPHER’S IDENTITY: A CONTRIBUTION TO THE THEME OF SKOVORODA AND UKRAINE

This article is devoted to the cultural identity of Hryhorij Skovoroda – one of the most outstanding Ukrainian philosophers of the 18th century. The incorporation of Ukrainian lands into the Moscow Empire and the ensuing centuries-long domination of Russian culture led to the adoption of valuable phenomena present in the culture of subordinate nations. As a consequence, from the beginning of the 20th century, the interest in the philosophy of Hryhorij Skovoroda in Russian science was related to calling him a Russian philosopher and studying his thought in the context of the history of Russian philosophy. Based on the research on the language of the works of Hryhorij Skovoroda, the analysis of his philosophical views and the lack of references in his works to Russian culture, it seems that the thesis that Hryhorij Skovoroda was a representative of the Ukrainian culture of the 17-18 centuries is based on Western European cultural patterns.
