Synopsis
DIVERSITY OF CONTEMPORARY POLISH LANGUAGE USED IN LITHUANIA IN THE LANGUAGE AWARENESS OF POLISH SCHOOL STUDENTS
The aim of the article is to explore young people’s attitudes towards diversity of the Polish language in Lithuania, specifics and usage areas of its variants. The research included students aged 17-18 from 5 different Polish schools in Lithuania. The results of research indicate that the standard Polish taught at school and the youth language called język wileński (the language of Vilnius region) or język mieszany (a mixed language) are two clearly distinct variants of the mother tongue, which also embrace various intermediary highly individualized variants adapted to the communication context and the addressee. The students envisage the most pronounced difference with the linguistic behavior of their grandparents and parents, whose language skills developed in different socio-political circumstances in Lithuania.
