CRUCIFIED ON A PALM TREE: CONSERVATION OF THE WOODEN POLYCHROME SCULPTURE OF CHRIST CRUCIFIED ON A PALM TREE IN THE DOMINICAN CHURCH IN LUBLIN AND THE ICONOGRAPHY OF ITS IMAGERY
This work was created basing on extensive documentation of conservation work on the polychrome sculpture of Christ crucified on a Palm Tree in the Dominican Church in Lublin, which were conducted in the years 2005-2007. The unusual imagery of the baroque crucifix attracted the attention of the Author, who has devoted much attention to the rich Christian symbolism associated with this work – the cross, types of crucifixion in art and the cross made of a living palm tree. The publication also includes the outline of the history of Lublin monastery and the Dominican Church associated with the sculpture. Over the years the sculpture has undergone a number of treatments which have changed its character and appearance, and the passage of time has also caused irreparable damage to it. Conservation works focused on restoration and aesthetic values of the work, and were guided by the principle of the smallest possible interference to its preserved, original primary layers. Therefore, the Author had to take into account the final effect of the works and the issues of reception and acceptance of the appearance of the object at the end of conservation work, which has also been described in the present work. After conservation works the object, despite a drastic change in its appearance, was returned to its religious functions and became the central element of the Mysteries of Good Friday in the Dominican Church, where the central role has always been played the relics of the Cross.
