HOW TADEUSZ ŻELEŃSKI CREATED BOY: STRATEGIES, SELF-FASHIONING, IMAGES

The book focuses on Tadeusz Boy-Żeleński (1874–1941), a Polish writer, translator and theatre critic, one of the major figures of Polish culture before World War II. The volume offers a new perspective on the evolution of the writer’s literary autobiography and image, the self-fashioning strategies that he used and the games that he played with his readers. At the same time, the book is a story of a little-known Boy-Żeleński: Boy as a publisher, Boy as a journalist and Boy as a creator. He was an excellent translator of such authors as Proust, Villon, Rabelais, or Balzac, the author of Słówka [Little Words], still recognized in Poland, and scripts performed by the cabaret “Zielony Balonik” [Green Balloon], a poet, a writer, and a commentator. At the same tame, he appears to be a master of self-fashioning, a public relations specialist, and a copywriter, although these concepts were most likely unknown in his time. Taking advantage of the power of the press, Boy presented himself to the readers in such a way that would meet their expectations, while protecting his privacy and guarding his most intimate secrets. He made this effort partly in rejection of the image imposed on him by his milieu, adopting and transforming selected elements of this image obtained in the process of literary communication.
