POLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY AMONG ITALIANS TAKING STATE CERTIFICATE EXAMINATIONS IN THE YEARS 2004–2015, WITH A SPECIAL FOCUS ON WRITING SKILLS
The present monograph entitled Polish Language Proficiency among Italians Taking State Certificate Examinations in the Years 2004–2015, with a Special Focus on Writing Skills presents a theoretical and empirical study in the field of foreign language teaching. While the research primarily contributes to studies on the acquisition of Polish as a foreign language, it also intersects with pedagogical linguistics. The book focuses on the Polish proficiency of Italian candidates who participated in state certificate examinations in Polish as a foreign language between 2004 and 2015. The study provides the first comprehensive description of a linguistically homogenous group taking Polish certification examinations, taking into account the candidates’ performance across all sections of the exam. The primary focus is on the candidates’ writing skills. The research data were collected from exam sheets completed by native Italian speakers, oral exam reports, and written compositions by the candidates. The certificate exams under analysis were administered in Poland, Italy, and Slovenia from 2004 to 2015, and covered three proficiency levels: basic (B1), intermediate (B2), and advanced (C2). Additionally, the candidates’ application forms were analyzed to construct a socio-demographic profile based on the information provided.
The choice of the research sample was deliberate, guided by the criteria of Italian citizenship and the candidates’ connection to the Italian language. The study analyzed 125 exam sheets from candidates who identified as Italian citizens and for whom Italian was their primary language (functionally the first language). This includes cases where Italian was either their native language or a second language (or in rare cases, a foreign language) which, due to regular immersion, had become their dominant language.
The Italian candidates’ language skills were evaluated using non-reactive desk research. The primary methods employed were qualitative document analysis (content analysis) and the descriptive method. Descriptive statistical analysis was used to determine the sociographic profile of the candidates and to provide insight into their exam results, including scores and grades.
