FOLK NAMES OF FEATURES IN THE POLISH PART OF WESTERN TATRAS COLLECTED IN THE MATERIALS FOR SŁOWNIK HISTORYCZNO-GEOGRAFICZNY TATR I PODTATRZA [‘A HISTORICAL-GEOGRAPHICAL DICTIONARY OF THE TATRA MOUNTAINS AND THE PODTATRZE REGION’] BY WITOLD HENRYK PARYSKI. A PHILOLOGICAL COMMENTARY

The article aims to provide a philological commentary on selected folk names of features in the Polish part of Western Tatras. These names were collected by Witold Henryk Paryski, a tatrologist, mountain rescuer, and the author of numerous significant publications about the Tatra Mountains. They were gathered in 150 binders with materials for the ultimately unfinished Słownik historyczno-geograficzny Tatr i Podtatrza (‘A historical-geographical dictionary of the Tatra mountains and the Podtatrze region’). Some of these names have been presented by W.H. Paryski in several of his own publications, but a review of the researcher’s notes allowed, at least partially, to get acquainted with his workshop, as well as to present the materials which were collected by the author of Wielka encyklopedia tatrzańska (‘The great encyclopaedia of the Tatras’), as it were, incidentally while conducting his primary research. The article also highlights the value of collecting dialectal variants of proper nouns and parallel names. These toponyms reflect the way in which the communities that created them perceive the world, and they are a testimony to the history of the region.
