Synopsis
NOMINAL COMPOUNDS WITH ĆWIERĆ [‘QUARTER’] AND CAŁY [‘WHOLE’] IN THE HISTORY OF THE POLISH LANGUAGE (COMPARED TO COMPOUNDS WITH PÓŁ [‘HALF’]), USING DICTIONARY MATERIAL
The paper is devoted to compounds featuring the numeral element ćwierć [‘quarter’] and the adjectival element cały ‘whole’, in the history of the Polish language, and in comparison with the compounds with the numeral pół ‘half’. The formations have been excerpted from selected Polish dictionaries; they constitute a small group, only 67 derivatives (43 compounds with ćwierć- and 24 with cał-). The analysis showed their limited activity in the history of the Polish language, and their limited categorical differentiation, in contrast to compounds with pół-. A comparison of these compounds, and the meanings of their numeral and adjectival bases, reveals a certain relationship that may explain this disproportion. Namely, pół has had few meanings throughout the history of Polish but creates multiple compounds that belong to various word-formative categories; meanwhile ćwierć and cały have multiple meanings but are not very productive, and compounds with these elements fall into only a handful of word-formative categories. Thus, it can be assumed that it is precisely the semantics of these words that has defined the development of the analyzed compounds.
