Synopsis
THE FIRST AND THIRD EDITION OF THE LEOPOLITA BIBLE (1561, 1577) IN LIGHT OF QUOTATIONS FOUND IN LINDE’S DICTIONARY
Samuel Bogumił Linde’s Słownik języka polskiego [‘A dictionary of the Polish language’; vols. 1–6, Warsaw 1807–1814) contains 312 comparisons between parallel passages in the first and third edition of the Leopolita Bible, a total of 624 biblical quotations. The quotations illustrate the following issues: 1) phonetic variation (14 comparisons); 2) morphological/formative differences (17); 3) one-word synonyms (205); 4) synonymy between word combinations, between single words and word combinations, and between word combinations and single words (54); 5) different content formulations (23). The analysis of the material shows that the second and third editions of the Leopolita Bible (1575, 1577) reflect primarily the comprehensive modernization of the language used in the first edition, which had been purged of numerous archaisms, colloquial terms and poorly assimilated loanwords from German.
