Synopsis

PLACE-BASED GLOTTODIDACTICS: A PEDAGOGICAL PERSPECTIVE ON SHAPING REGIONAL AND LOCAL IDENTITY IN LEARNERS OF POLISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE

The article presents the principles of the concept of place-based pedagogy, whose application in language didactics can support the building of regional or local identification among foreign language learners in a native-speaking environment. Selected findings regarding the category of space and its relation to the communication process, as well as the concept of identification in relation to forming bonds with a given territory are described. Reflections of place-based pedagogy researchers (mainly Maria Mendel) are presented, relating them to the process of shaping the identification of foreigners learning Polish with the locality or region where they are learning the Polish language and culture. Concepts such as place action and action of place, friendly and hostile places, community of place, place as autobiography, and the learning place are introduced. Educational publications and scientific works related to the discussed issue, including the first collective monograph entirely dedicated to locality and regionalism in language didactics practice, are reviewed. The conclusion outlines examples of how the reflections discussed in the text can be implemented, in line with the idea of pedagogization through places.
