SPHRAGISTICS OF PARISH PRIESTS OF SILESIAN PARISH CHURCHES IN PRE-HUSSITE TIMES (UNTIL 1419)
The presented publication is a monographic analysis of the section of sigillography indicated in its title, which are seals belonging to parish priests. It is based on source material gathered in the Catalogue of Seals of Silesian Parish Priests (up to 1419) published by Księgarnia Akademicka in 2024. The publication consists of an introduction, conclusion, and four chapters describing various aspects of the studied seals. The first chapter analyzes the formal elements of the seals, such as shape, size, wax color, method of attaching the imprints to documents, and the appearance of the reverse side. The second chapter deals with the inscriptions present on parish priests’ seals, primarily the surrounding legends. Attention is paid to the epigraphic script, the content of the legends, the abbreviations and special signs used in them, and their functions. It also presents the issue of other inscriptions found on the analyzed artifacts that are not legends. The third chapter addresses the iconography of parish priests’ seals. In its first part, the gathered sigillographic material is divided according to the typology adopted by the author into seals with personal signs of the holder, seals with monastic signs, seals with hagiographic motifs, and mixed subtypes, and then analyzed in subsequent subsections. The last, fourth chapter concerns the functioning of Silesian parish priests’ seals. The considerations contained in it focus on the sources of motifs appearing in the iconography of these seals, their durability on the seals of successive parish priests serving in the same parish, and the few preserved sigillographic systems of Silesian parish priests. The conclusion addresses, among other things, the issue of dividing the messages expressed by the analyzed artifacts into typical and individual content and formulates research postulates for the future.
