Synopsis
SOME REFLECTIONS ON SOVIET TEXTBOOKS ON THE HISTORY OF KAZAKHSTAN
This article is an attempt at a critical reflection on Soviet textbooks on the history of Kazakhstan, which were created and used in conditions of strong ideological influence on historical narrative. The author analyses selected textbooks in terms of content, narrative and the presentation of key events and figures in the history of Kazakhstan, paying particular attention to their compliance with the Marxist-Leninist vision of history and their propaganda role. The text also addresses the problem of the marginalisation of the national identity of Kazakhs and the subordination of local history to the narrative of ‘brotherly cooperation’ with the nations of the USSR, especially with Russians. These reflections aim to show the impact of historical educatio during the Soviet period on the formation of historical consciousness and collective identity in Kazakhstan, and serve as a starting point for considerations on contemporary memory politics in the region.
