SECOND LANGUAGE – TERMINOLOGY AND MEANING. THE CASE OF POLISH

Second language has recently been gaining importance due to the large influx of immigrants to Poland, as this term is associated with it. There are many inaccuracies in its application and understanding in the literature on the subject, which is why this text attempts to establish its contemporary version. An outline of the fate of the concept of a second language is presented here, considering it from various perspectives, including language policy, the method and chronology of its mastery and the variability of its function. The concepts of second language and interlanguage are also juxtaposed, emphasizing the transitory nature of both. The background for the considerations is the confrontation with the concepts of mother tongue and foreign language.
