CULTURAL COMPETENCE AS FACTOR DETERMINING THE RECEPTION OF CULTURE TEXTS

The text concentrates on cultural and intercultural competence, which affects the reception of cultural texts. The theoretical part discusses various approaches to intercultural competence, as well as the concepts of cultural scripts and cultural programming. The research part presents the results of surveys conducted among students of Polish as a foreign language from Slavic (Ukraine, Belarus, Russia) and Asian (China, Korea and Vietnam) countries. They were to determine the scope of learners’ knowledge of Polish culture, rooted in Christian and Mediterranean traditions, necessary for reading Polish literary works. The text ends with postulates concerning teaching cultural and intercultural competence to foreigners from various circles.
