Synopsis
TRANSLATIONS OF WORKS OF CHINESE LITERATURE IN THE LIGHT OF POLISH-CHINESE RELATIONS
In the hundred-year history of translating works of Chinese literature into Polish, waves of translations have alternated with periods of stagnation. These phases most often reflected the state of political relations between Poland and China. The literary exchange that began in the mid-20th century was the effect of the ideological rapprochement between the People’s Republic of China and the Polish People’s Republic, but in the 1960s it stopped as an aftereffect of the cooling of relations. The revival took place in the 1990s, after a redefinition of foreign policies of both countries. At the same time, entities involved in literary translation have also undergone changes. Initially, the field was the domain of academic pioneers, with time shifting towards greater commercialization and thematic diversification. At the same time, Chinese interests in cultural promotion remain an important factor driving translations.
