Streszczenie

ONCE AGAIN ABOUT THE NEAPOLITAN BREVIARY IN THE PRINCES CZARTORYSKI LIBRARY IN CRACOW (SIG. MS. CZART. 1211 IV)

The Princes Czartoryski Library in Cracow houses a richly illuminated breviary, made in Naples around 1465, which in earlier scholarly literature was considered to be a manuscript belonging to Pope Sixtus IV. The purpose of this article is to review the current state of research on the breviary in light of the latest knowledge on Neapolitan book painting.
When the manuscript was presented to Sigismund III Vasa in 1621, part of the decoration on page 21, containing the coat of arms of the original owner, was repainted. Formal genetic analysis and research at the Laboratory for Analysis and Non-Destructive Testing of Historical Objects (LANBOZ) at the National Museum in Cracow have revealed two independent stages of intervention – an earlier one, made at an unknown date, when the tiara and St. Peter’s keys were added, and a 17th-century one, when the earlier coat of arms was replaced with the coat of arms of Urban IV. In the light of the latest research, the hypothesis about the papal provenance of the manuscript, which most likely belonged to the Queen of Naples, Isabella de Chiaromonte, should be rejected.
