Symbolika baletów Augusta Bournonville’a .......... 75

Synopsis

THE SYMBOLISM CONTAINED IN THE BALLETS BY AUGUSTE BOURNONVILLE

This paper presents an analysis of the symbolic meanings, contained in librettos of the ballets created by the foremost Danish choreographer of the Romanticism- Auguste Bournonville. The main idea of these considerations is based on the paradigm that romantic and classical ballets, like works of art created in the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and Baroque contain symbolic meanings hidden beneath the strict visual level of the work of art. The choice of this particular artist and his works of art for this survey is a result of either historical authenticity of Bournonville’s works (which is very rare among the most of ballets works – as seen from the historical perspective) or from Bournonville’s documented declarations of intentional presentation of universal meanings in his ballets. Three of the most popular Bournonville’s ballets: Sylfiden, Napoli and Et Folkesagen are the subject of a detailed analysis of symbolic meanings on the story level of these works of art.
