“PERHAPS I WOULD THINK OTHERWISE IF I WERE POLYGAMOUS, MAHOMETAN AND HALF-SAVAGE!” INTERCULTURAL DIALOGUE IN TABLEAUX ALGÉRIENS BY GUSTAVE GUILLAUMET

The present paper focuses on the presence (and quality) of intercultural dialogue in Tableaux algériens (1888), a collection of travel memories and impressions, written by the orientalist painter Gustave Guillaumet (1840-1887). By analyzing the selected examples of dialogues, reported and indirect speeches present in the text, we will show the attitude of the painter towards the Algerians and the image of those people (and their culture) he wanted to transfer to his French readers.
