PODELWIE TOWNHOUSE ON GRODZKA STREET IN KRAKOW (1562–1804)

The townhouse called Podelwie (from its emblem depicting a lion) was a detached building until the beginning of the nineteenth century. After it was connected to the neighbouring property, it is now part of the townhouse at 32 Grodzka Street. In the fifteenth century, it was owned by the Morsztyn family, then by the Boner family, from whom the city authorities of Krakow bought the property in April 1562. The transaction also included three buildings located on Szeroka Street (today Plac Dominikański), later known as the Siedem Kramów (Seven Stalls). Because the back rooms of these city properties were adjacent, the name Podelwie was used to refer to both the townhouse on Grodzka Street and the buildings on Szeroka Street, and this is how the city accounts described the rent obtained from renting out the premises in these eight townhouses. The Podelwie townhouse bordered the courtyard of the wall of the Holy Trinity Church cemetery (in the area that today is Dominikańska Street), where a sewer had run since the Middle Ages, the maintenance and use of which had caused confl icts between the City Council and the Dominican monastery. In 1804, the townhouse was bought from the city by Karol Kryszkier.
