CULTURES OF EDUCATION. A STUDY OF LEARNING PREFERENCES AMONG CHINESE STUDENTS OF POLISH STUDIES
This article contributes to the ongoing research on educational cultures, with a particular emphasis on the Socratic method, characteristic of the broader Western tradition, and the Confucian model, predominant in East Asian countries. The theoretical section examines these two models in relation to educational objectives, the role of the teacher, the responsibilities of the student, and the dynamics of the learning environment. The empirical section presents the findings of a survey study conducted among 194 students, including Chinese students of Polish studies and a control group of Polish students. A key variable influencing educational preferences is the participants’ exposure to different teaching approaches. Consequently, the analysis is structured around three groups: Chinese students who have studied exclusively in their home institutions, Chinese students who have pursued extended studies at Polish universities, and Polish students preparing to become teachers of the Polish language. The findings indicate significant differences in the perceived effectiveness of various instructional strategies for teaching language subsystems and fostering communicative competence.
