COGNITIVE BENEFITS FOR A FOREIGN STUDENT RESULTING FROM CLASSES DEVOTED TO THE POLISH LANGUAGE SEEN FROM A DIACHRONIC PERSPECTIVE
The paper characterizes the content of the seminar Ewolucja języka polskiego na tle przemian cywilizacyjnych i kulturowych [Evolution of the Polish Language against the Background of Civilizational and Cultural Changes], proposed at the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań in the field of master’s studies filologia polska jako obca [Polish Studies for International Students]. The seminar is devoted to extralingual factors that influenced the evolution of the Polish language system. On the example of selected issues covered during this seminar, the cognitive benefits that a foreign student can derive from classes devoted to the Polish language from a diachronic perspective are presented. The classes are linguacultural in nature, and their content includes a triad of mutually complementary cognitive components, which include: metalinguistic reflection, cultural competence, linguistic competence. Thanks to this, participation in these classes allows foreign students, including Chinese, to look at the Polish language as a language that co-creates the values of Polish culture, including contemporary one. Students also realize that Polish culture, created, among other factors, by language, is both a component and a derivative of European culture.
