GOTHIC CERAMIC FLOOR TILES FROM THE CORONATION CATHEDRAL IN CRACOW

This article provides a detailed discussion of Gothic ceramic floor tiles found at Cracow Cathedral. Among the square ceramic tiles recovered from the Coronation Cathedral at Wawel, three main types of tiles can be distinguished, each with distinct floral or even floral-heraldic ornamentation. The first type is represented by tiles with strongly heraldically stylised lilies. The second type consists of tiles decorated with acanthus leaf motifs. The last identified type in the collection of Gothic tiles from Wawel consists of tiles decorated with a cup-shaped floral motif, possibly tulips or lotuses. The dimensions of the preserved complete tiles are 25.8–26.0 × 25.8–26.0 cm and a thickness of 7.8–8.0 cm. The chronology of the laying of this floor was related to the period between the consecration of the main altar in the chancel in 1346 and the final consecration of the entire Gothic cathedral in 1364.
