Streszczenie

‘WORK OF THE FINEST QUALITY AND BEAUTY’. A CONTRIBUTION TO RESEARCH ON ART IN THE MILIEU OF THE DOMINICAN CHURCH IN CRACOW IN THE 1680S

The 1680s were a time of prosperity and numerous artistic initiatives for the Holy Trinity Church in Cracow. During the Baroque period, the Dominican friary commissioned numerous painters, sculptors and goldsmiths from Cracow itself, from all over the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, and sometimes even from beyond its borders. Artistic contracts preserved to this day allow us to learn about unknown artists and craftsmen associated with Dominican friaries, as well as details of their commissions. On 13 June 1685, the Dominicans and the representatives of the Archconfraternity of the Rosary signed a contract for the making of gilded silver “robes” for the image of Our Lady of the Rosary, which was located on the side of the rood arch of the church. The contract was supported by the prior Kandyd Zagórowski and Atanazy Cieszkowic. The commission was carried out by Michał Filowicz, and the silver work created for the Dominican church is the first known work of this goldsmith’s workshop.
