Streszczenie

THE FUNERARY MONUMENT TO STANISŁAW SOŁTYK BY FRANCESCO POZZI IN THE DOMINICAN CHURCH IN CRACOW – KNOWN OR UNKNOWN?

This article is devoted to the genesis of the little-known neoclassical monument of Stanisław Sołtyk, authored by the Florentine sculptor Francesco Pozzi (1790−1844). The sculpture, depicting a despairing young woman and an angel, is located in the Rosary Chapel of the Holy Trinity’s Dominican Church in Cracow. The work was commissioned by Stanisław’s widow, Henrietta Sołtyk née Ankwicz. The author tries to reconstruct the specific context of the monument’s commission, specifically its connection with Henrietta’s other commission of her father’s monument, also sculpted by Pozzi and intended for the Cracow Cathedral. The author also tries to explain why the Sołtyk monument is so little known in art historiography as compared to other Pozzi’s works.
Owing to the glyptic art researchers Gabriella Tassinari and Paweł Gołyźniak, it is known that in the National Museum in Cracow there are preserved two intaglios by Pozzi. However the newest monograph of this sculptor’s oeuvre (by Sandro Bellesi and Gabriella Tassinari), while discussing the engraved gems, does not mention the Cracow monuments. Bellesi, however, reported that Pozzi died as a result of his trip to Cracow. She wrongly suggested that he worked for the Ogińsky family in this town.
