“I LOVED KANTOR!”: ON THE ARTISTIC FRIENDSHIP BETWEEN JERZY NOWOSIELSKI AND TADEUSZ KANTOR
It would be difficult to find two people with more different temperaments and personalities. And yet their artistic friendship proved surprisingly steadfast and enduring. Jerzy Nowosielski’s friendship with Tadeusz Kantor weathered many storms, from the war years right up to – literally – the grave. They met in 1941; in the second half of the 1940s, Nowosielski was Kantor’s assistant at the Academy of Fine Arts, and Kantor served as a witness at the Nowosielskis’ wedding. Together they exhibited at Krzysztofory and were active in the Grupa Krakowska (Krakow Group); together they stood up to the authorities at the Academy of Fine Arts, who sought to dismiss Kantor from his visiting professorship in 1969. At Tadeusz Kantor’s grave – in December 1990 – it was Jerzy Nowosielski who solemnly declared the end of the 20th century.
