THE PERFORMATIVITY OF SCIENCE FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF ACTOR-NETWORK THEORY: A CASE STUDY OF SOCIAL SCIENCE PARADIGMS AS MANAGEMENT PARADIGMS

Starting with a definition of the concept of a paradigm, the author discusses management paradigms and then focuses on presenting the essence of the social science paradigms of Gibson Burrell and Gareth Morgan in order to illustrate, in the next step, the impossibility of assigning the research conducted in the spirit of (synthesized for the purposes of the analysis) the actor-network theory to either of these paradigms. The article proposes, for the purposes of discussion – in place of objectivist, subjectivist, regulation-oriented, and change-oriented paradigms – the concepts of objectivates, subjectivates, regulates, and radicates. It is also shown that Actor-Network Theory allows us to move away from the dualism spanning objectivism and subjectivism, and that science has no choice between influencing reality or merely describing it – it always changes reality, and is therefore performative: science co-performs the world. The hypothesis serving as the starting point for the analysis posits that it is not possible to unambiguously classify research utilizing ANT (Actor-Network Theory) under any of the paradigmatic proposals put forward by Burrell and Morgan.
