OSIP MANDELSTAM’S CAUCASIAN REMINISCENCES FROM HIS TRIP TO ARMENIA, OR A WORD ABOUT LONGING
This article examines Osip Mandelstam’s late work, which echoes the poet’s journey to Armenia (1930). The primary research material consists of a poetic cycle titled Armenia (1931) and a prose work Journey to Armenia (1933). This study is situated within the concept of geopoetics and posits a connection between Mandelstam’s chosen form of works and the place it depicts. The analysis considers biographical themes, critical reactions to his unusual travel writing, and the poet’s views on culture and art, as defined in the programmatic manifesto of Acmeism. The article focuses on the poet’s comprehensive perception of Armenia and the Caucasus, which encompasses intellectual associations (historical, linguistic), sensual reactions, and nature observations. As the research suggests, Armenia is for Mandelstam a response to his “nostalgia for world culture”.
