BETWEEN THE NOVEL AND THE LIFE OF A SAINT: NARRATIVE STRATEGIES IN THE CONSTRUCTION
OF HOLINESS IN LYUDMILA ULITSKAYA’S DANIEL STEIN, INTERPRETER
This paper examines the narratological structure of Lyudmila Ulitskaya’s novel Daniel Stein, Translator, focusing on polyphonic narration and the blurring of boundaries between fiction and documentary discourse. The narrative is constructed as a montage of heterogeneous textual forms that simulate documentary authenticity while functioning as fictional constructs. The protagonist’s biography unfolds in a fragmented, non-linear manner through multiple narrative perspectives. Particular attention is paid to the epistolary mode, especially the letters attributed to a character named Ulitskaya, which serve as metanarrative reflections on authorship and narration. The analysis highlights the role of the implied author in organizing the heterogeneous material and guiding interpretation. The paper argues that Ulitskaya employs postmodern narrative techniques in the service of a modernized hagiographic narrative, exploring the possibility of representing holiness in contemporary prose.
