OH, I LOVE KRAKOW… KRAKOW IN THE WORKS OF PROFESSOR MIECZYSŁAW ROKOSZ

Professor Mieczysław Rokosz was a liated with the Institute of History at the Jagiellonian University for thirty-five years. His interests centred on the auxiliary sciences of history and the related history and culture of old Krakow. This article discusses his publications in this field. Initially, his interests focused on the history of early books and old Polish book illustrations depicting the Polish national coat of arms, the White Eagle. He then undertook research on Polish coronation regalia and rituals of power, as well as legendary themes related to royal power and Polish tradition and identity. He studied the history of the bells of Wawel Cathedral, in particular the Royal Sigismund Bell. As the president of the Kościuszko Mound Committee, he undertook extensive construction and adaptation work over a period of thirty years, transforming the Mound and its surroundings into a modern museum facility. At the same time, he conducted academic and popular science work devoted to the figure of Tadeusz Kościuszko and the history of the Mound. The history and culture of Zakopane and Podhale played an important role in his work. Among the auxiliary sciences of history, he worked in historical bibliology, legal archaeology, historical geography, and occasionally heraldry, sphragistics and medallic art. His works make a significant contribution to the history of Polish culture.
