THE URBAN HISTORIOGRAPHY STILL UNKNOWN. THE 17TH CENTURY „CALENDAR” OF KAZIMIERZ COUNCILOR MARCIN GOLIŃSKI
In this article, the author revisits the issue of early modern urban historiography, which, unfortunately, remains outside the mainstream of research in Polish historiography. Starting with an outline of the current state of knowledge about chronicle-like works produced in the principal cities of the former Kingdom of Poland, the focus is on the writings of Marcin Goliński (1608–1673), a councilor of the town of Kazimierz near Cracow. Goliński left behind thousands of manuscript pages, preserved today in the collections of the National Museum (Czartoryski Library) in Cracow and the Ossoliński National Institute in Wrocław. On these pages, he recorded information about contemporary events, both concerning the town in whose administration he served and the broader state. The article includes an edition of an urban chronicle in which Goliński documented personnel changes within municipal offices. He supplemented this record with autobiographical information and his own, often extensive, commentary on contemporary events, such as the history of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, changes on the throne, the Swedish invasion, and the Lubomirski Rebellion. The published source signifi cantly enriches our knowledge of Poland’s history in the first half of the 17th century. Additionally, it provides an excellent resource for studying historiographical writing in the small towns of the Crown.
