Streszczenie

INDISPENSABLE TOOLS FOR SPHRAGISTICS WŁODZIMIERZ BUDKA’S CASTS OF NOBLE SEALS IN THE COLLECTIONS OF THE LABORATORY OF THE AUXILIARY SCIENCES OF HISTORY AND SOURCE STUDIES OF THE JAGIELLONIAN UNIVERSITY

The holdings of the Laboratory of the Auxiliary Sciences of History and Source Studies at the Jagiellonian University includes a collection of seal casts made by Włodzimierz Budka (1894–1977), an eminent archivist from Krakow. It is the least studied collection of all those that make up the sphragistic collection of the Laboratory. It was created in the 1930s and 1940s as an easily accessed collection of Budka’s casts, and it came to the Laboratory in the 1980s thanks to his wife Zofia Kozłowska-Budowa. Due to its large number (311 objects) and the difficulties associated with their study, the article is limited to the casts of noble seals found in the collection. This subset consists of 148 casts of 77 seals belonging to 59 owners, representing 48 noble families of Poland and Lithuania in the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries. These are carefully made casts, made in plaster using plasticine moulds taken from imprints of paper seals, often subjected to treatments to increase legibility. The objects form a collection that is homogeneous in terms of geography and society (magnates of Małopolska), genealogy and prosopography (officials of the Krakow nobility) and typology and iconography (representative coat of arms seal). The identifi cation of the collection reveals Budka’s academic interests and the modern methods of his sphragistic research. An integral part of the article is an inventory of the noble seals found in the studied collection.
