RESEARCH ON THE INTERPRETATION OF FERDYDURKE BY POLISH LITERARY CRITICS FROM 1937 TO THE PRESENT DAY

In this paper, by analyzing the changes in the attitude of the Polish literary community towards Ferdydurke since its publication, I will summarize the reasons related to the historical background, national mentality, and the development of literary appearance. The aim of the paper is to understand the psychological state of the Polish nation and its transformations during this period by examining the literary reception of Poles since World War II, and I hope to provide Chinese readers with a new perspective on reading and studying Ferdydurke. I selected 127 critical articles, which allowed me to meet the research requirements. Based on reading, analyzing, and organizing these documents, I divided the different foundations of Ferdydurke’s literary reception since its publication in 1937 into three periods. The first period covers the years 1937–1958. The second period spans the years 1958–1986. The third stage extends from 1986 to the present day. One of the ultimate goals of literary studies is to gain a better understanding of the characteristics of a nation’s character. Therefore, by exploring this topic, I hope to achieve two objectives: one is to present Chinese readers with various perspectives of interpreting Ferdydurke, and the other is to contribute to a better understanding of the process of changes in the mentality of Poles since World War II.
